Chaplain's Corner: Pray Without Ceasing

Friday, February 16, 2018

By Reverend Vona Wilson, YMCA Chaplain

There are occasions when life holds too much pain for us to bear. We wonder, “How can God allow me to feel this pain?”

There are moments when the joy of life is more than we can contain. We wonder, “How can God allow me to feel this joy?”

God gave each of us one life on earth. It will be full of overwhelming moments of joy that we could never imagine. It will be full of heartbreaking moments that we never forget. Reaching out for help when we need it and reaching out to help when someone is hurting are the very ways we all experience God’s continuous love for us.

No matter what the situation is, your prayer may be the strength that helps a hurting person live through the next hour. Your prayer may be the grace that helps a joyful person be aware of how precious life can be. What is happening in your life right now? God is listening for your heart and voice in prayer.

Prayer starters

God, we are thankful for _______________________; help us to remember this blessing and increase our trust in you. You are faithful and your steadfast love endures forever. (Psalm 136)

God, our hearts are breaking for ____________________________; please move into this situation and reveal yourself in the ways people need to experience you. (Matthew 11:28-30)

God, our hearts are full of joy for _____________________; please help us share that joy in ways that give thanks to you for this gift of life. (Psalm 107)

God, we need wisdom for the situation of ________________; we know true wisdom comes straight from you. Please open our minds to perceive your wisdom and give us courage to receive it. (James 1:5)

God, sometimes we feel numb and don’t even know how to pray. Please wake up our spirits and open our ears to hear you when you speak. We trust you and we love you. Hear our silence, hear our voices, hear our hearts. (Romans 8:26-27) Thank you. Amen.
