Youth Development

For a Better Tomorrow

The YMCA believes that every child—regardless of income level or background—should feel safe, supported and empowered to reach their full potential.

Why It Matters

Growing up is tough. Each day, our youth and teens face obstacles that can interfere with their safety, academic performance and physical and emotional development.

  • Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death among young people (ages 1-14).

  • 1 in 5 Tennessee youth is responsible for taking care of themselves after school.

  • Nearly 60% of Tennessee students are considered economically disadvantaged, limited their access to out-of-school learning opportunities.

How the Y is Helping

From the swimming pool to the sports field, summer camp to our welcoming teen centers, more than 81,000 youth across Middle Tennessee rely on the Y to learn critical life skills, explore their passions and build confidence.

  • Last year, the Y helped more than 6,800 kids learn life-saving skills in swim lessons.

  • Nurtured the potential of more than 81,000 youth through youth programs and YMCA membership.

  • Keep nearly 10,000 kids engaged throughout the summer with camps and enrichment programs.
